Hampshire Ornithological Society is organising a survey of breeding waders in the New Forest during 2025.
We will be looking for Snipe, Lapwing, Curlew and Redshank.
During previous surveys a total of about 300 pairs was found and it will be fascinating to compare the breeding density and distribution of each species with previous years.
On this website you can check out the and request to survey one or more of nearly 200 1km squares. When approved, you will be able to download maps/recording forms for each of your squares.
To survey for Snipe, you will need to get within 50m of all suitable breeding habitat and this may mean walking through marshy ground, around dawn and dusk. You may wish to choose squares that do not have extensive wet areas, or subsequently, if you are uncomfortable with surveying significant parts of your squares, please let Nigel Matthews know so that he can arrange for someone else to help.
To get started, view the map to see the available survey squares.
